Thousands of teachers, students and officials of National University (NU) on Saturday formed human chains across the country demanding withdrawal of the ongoing blockade and hartal, which are badly hampering the academic activities.
They have urged the leaders of all the political parties in the country to keep education above politics.
Teachers and students from 2,154 educational institutions all over the country formed human chains on their respective campuses for about 45 minutes. The programme started at 11am and ended at 11:45.
NU Vice-Chancellor Professor Harun-or-Rashid told The New Nation, “The NU authorities in order to reduce the session jam have taken several initiatives including ‘Crash Programme. But the violent politics are spoiling our effort. So, the students, the teachers and the officials of NU formed human chains condemning violence in the name of politics.
“The NU is working to improve the overall academic atmosphere of the university. But it will not be possible if blockade and hartal continues. At least 20 lakh students will be the victims of the violent political programmes,” Professor Harun said.
Dhaka College, Eden College, Titumir College, Suhrawardy College and Mirpur Bangla College affiliated to the NU in the capital formed human chains with hundreds of students, teachers and officials.
The human chains were held at every college in divisions, districts and upazilas across the country. Chittagong Commerce College Principal Professor Md Ayub Bhuiyan expressed his doubt about the completion of the syllabus following the current political situation in the country.
The principals of all colleges in the country echoed the same.
