Campus Report :Faculty members of the Dept of Environmental Science and Management (DESM) of North South University (NSU) met governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB), Dr Atiur Rahman at his office in the capital on Sunday. The team, comprised of DESM Chair Dr Hassan Mahmud and his colleagues Prof ATM Nurul Amin, Prof Mizan R Khan, Dr Md. Jakariya and Dr Biswas Karabi Farhana, outlined BB governor the current status of environmental education in the country and NSU’s pioneering role in this area. They mentioned the very low level of interest of students in seeking admission in the DESM, primarily became of very few job openings in this field. The team broached various ideas about getting around this difficulty and requested BB’s support in widening job opportunities for environmental science graduates in the financial sector towards promotion of green banking practices. BB governor reiterated Bangladesh Bank’s commitment towards environmentally responsible green financing in the country’s financial sector, mentioning various initiatives including putting in place routines of environmental risk assessment of lending proposals, carbon footpront measurement, and greening of internal practices and processes in banks.BB governor suggested that the DESM of NSU build up liaison with banks, offering them knowhow support in the various greening initiatives now underway; gradually broadening environmental job openings in the financial sector. He assured that BB’s Green Banking and CSR Department will assist the NSU DESM in building up these liaisons.
