UNB, Dhaka :
Non-resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) on Saturday urged the government to put in place a legal framework to protect their investment and assets in their absence.
“Many NRBs don’t find confidence in the existing law and rules for them,” said a leader of the Centre for Non Resident Bangladeshis (CNRB) while presenting recommendations at the concluding session of the World Conference Series 2014 at city’s Hotel Sonargaon.
Held with CNRB chairman Shekil Chowdhury in the chair, the function was addressed, among others, by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman, BGMEA President Atiqul Islam, CPD director Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem, newly-appointed deputy chief of US Embassy David Mili, and former commerce secretary Suhel Ahmed.
The organisers said they held 14 NRB conferences in different countries and prepared a set of recommendations for the government to facilitate the expatriate Bangladeshis.
They alleged that the NRBs are still being harassed at airports when the return home from abroad.
Responding to their plea, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said a database could be made by software where the NRBs can disclose their assets and supply a copy of it to the nearest
police station so that the police can take care of their assets in their absence.
The state minister further said the government expects that the NRBs will uphold the country’s image abroad, referring to the case of UAE where .Bangladeshis has been involved into criminal activities resulting in embarrassing situation for the country.
Applauding the NRBs’ role in increasing the country’s foreign exchange reserve, Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman called upon them to send money through formal channel at least 90 percent instead of 81 percent as the central bank has created facilities for sending remittances to their relatives at the shortest possible time.
Dr Golam Moazzem said it needs to build confidence among the NRBs to attract investment. “The government should offer something more to NRBs to attract their investment to the country.”
Former commerce secretary Suhel Ahmed Chowdhury said the NRBs and private sector should come forward alongside the government to provide training to new job seekers as 20 lakh people are entering the job market every year.
