Novels on the top of demand by book lovers at Amar Ekushey Boi Mela this year also.
A good number of new novels hit the stalls everyday in the Mela and their selling is higher than other books. At least 405 new novels have arrived at the Boi Mela till yesterday, on the 15th day of the Mela, the publishers said.
They said the book lovers, mainly youths, come to the Boi Mela and search for novels at first. But the ‘name-only’ novels have no demand to book lovers. They choose the books of noted writers.
On the special days, like Pahela Falgun and Valentine’s Day, the book lovers also thronged the book stalls where novels are available.
Monirul Haque, Publisher of Ananya Prokashan, said, “The selling of novels is increasing day by day. The youths are paying more attention to the novels.
“I used to come to the Boi Mela when I was a 1st year student of Dhaka University. I bought many books on different subjects of many writers. I gave emphasize on books on poems at first. But the classic poem’s books are rare. So, now I buy novel. It helps me to pass time and learn more,” said Anisur Rahman, a Masters student of Film and Television Studies Department.
Meanwhile, hundreds of books were damaged due to sudden rain in the wee ours of Sunday. The publishing houses, however, managed the adverse impact of rain immediately and saved their stall from ruining.
Seventy two new books arrived and 10 cover of the books were unveiled on Sunday.
Of the new books, seven are storybooks, 11 novels, seven essay books, 15 poems, five on research, five children literature, four on biography, three on travel, one on Science, two on translation, one on politics and 11 on other subjects.

A discussion on “National Professor Salahuddin Ahmed” was held in the main podium of the Bangla Academy in the evening.
Professor Mahmud Shah Quraishi presided over the function while Dr Firoz Mahmud presented the keynote paper. Shamsul Hossain, Md Zahidur Rahman, Nishat Jahan Rana and Mrittika Shahittya, among others, took part in the discussion. A fascinating cultural programme was also held in the evening.
The discussion on “Professor Zillur Rahman Siddique” will be held in the main podium of the Bangla Academy today (Monday). Professor Abul Ahsan Chowdhury will preside over the function while Ahmed Reza will present a keynote paper. Kazol Bandopadhyai, Rashid Odhikari and Mohammad Joinuddin will join the discussion.
