Staff Reporter :
A Supreme Court lawyer on Tuesday sent a notice to the authorities of Dhaka University (DU) for not complying with a High Court directive over holding the Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU) election.
The Vice Chancellor (VC), proctor and treasurer of DU have been made respondents to the notice.
Advocate Manzill Murshid served the notice by post saying that a contempt of court case will be filed with the HC against the respondents if they do not take step in seven days for holding the DUCSU election.
Citing from the notice, the lawyer told journalists that following a writ petition collectively filed by 25 DU students, the HC on January 17 this year directed the respondents to hold DUCSU election at a suitable time, preferably in six months.
The court also ordered the Home Ministry to provide necessary assistance to the DU authorities to maintain the law and order for holding the election.
The HC order was officially sent to the respondents in February, Advocate Manzill said, adding that a certified copy of the HC directive was sent to the DU VC on April 4 through a lawyer.
The office of the VC received the certified copy of the HC order on April 4. But, the respondents have not taken any step for holding the DUCSU election yet, which amounts to contempt of court, the lawyer added.
The last election to the DUCSU took place 27 years ago, on June 6, 1990. Student organisations, especially the left leaning ones, had demanded the holding of the election on numerous times.
