A legal notice has been sent for taking necessary steps to stop airing Bangladeshi products’ advertisements on foreign channel within 24 hours.
A Supreme Court lawyer, Eklas Uddin Bhuiya, sent the notice with a threat to take legal action if the authorities concerned would not take any effective measures within the period. The notice was sent to secretaries to Information Ministry, Commerce Ministry, Chairman of National Revenue Board, Bangladesh Bank Governor, Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication
Regulatory Commission (BTRC), Managing Director of Nation Wide Media Limited and Managing Director of DG Zadu Broad Band Limited through registry post.
According to the notice, it is said Bangladesh Cable Television Network (Regulation) Act was passed on September 24, 2006 and as per the section 19 (13) of the act there is no rule to air advertisements through foreign TV channels for Bangladeshi people. If anyone is involved in violating the act, he/she or the organisation should be sentenced to two years’ imprisonment or be fined Tk 1 lakh.
Besides, according to the section 15 of the Act, if any event is contradictory to the section 19, the broadcasting authority of the TV channel will be stopped.
