UNB, Dhaka :
There is nothing serious in Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi’s resignation remark which he made amid criticisms for the soaring onion prices, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday.
“This is not a matter of resignation. He might have made the comment as he’s in charge of the ministry,” Quader said while talking to reporters at the Secretariat.
In a views-exchange meeting in the city on Tuesday, the Commerce Minister reportedly said if onion prices come down with his resignation then his resignation is a matter of one second.
“The Cabinet is not entrusted with the responsibility of evaluating the performance of a minister and it has no right to take any decision in this regard. This is the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister, and it’ll be her decision that who’ll be there in the Cabinet or who won’t. I don’t want to make any comment on it,” Quader said. Replying to a question about the price hike of essentials, he said there is no reason to deny the fact that the market is now a bit unstable, and the government is trying to bring it under control.
Asked whether the anti-graft drive is over, Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, said: “Who has said the drive is over? The process of seeking bank statements, filing of cases by the ACC and submission of charge-sheets (against corrupt elements) are underway.”
About graft allegations against some secretaries and police officials, he said investigations are going on against them. “The ACC has been asked to take action whenever necessary. The government won’t interfere in it.”
Talking about the city corporation elections, the ruling party leader said their party wants the polls to be held in the stipulated time. “The Election Commission has sought a proposal from me about the election schedule and I talked to the Prime Minister about it. But she clearly said it’s the jurisdiction of the Election Commission,” he said.
Mentioning that they want to win the upcoming polls, Quader said they are overhauling the organisation to this end.
Asked about any change in the central leadership of Awami League, he said the committee will be the mixture of old and new faces.
