Not memorization, students need analytical involvement

ABOUT one lakh students have applied to the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) of the Primary and Mass Education Ministry for reexamination of their results, claiming that justice will be established if the authorities work properly. Some of students who failed in the examination alleged that they did not get pass marks due to the negligence or mistake of the teachers and others, as per a report of our daily.
The DPE sources said, the students who sat for the Primary Education Completion Examination last year were asked to apply for revision of their results between December 15 last year and January 30 this year. The DPE will re-evaluate the answer sheets centrally with the assistance of the District and Upazila offices.
The DPE officials said, the students mostly applied to revise their results in Bangla, English, Mathematics and General Science. More than 97 percent students passed the Primary Education Completion (PEC) and Ebtedayee examinations 2018. As many as 26,52,896 students appeared in the PEC and 25,88,904 of them passed. The successful candidates included 14,07,885 girls and 11,81,019 boys. Among the GPA-5 achievers, there were 2,06,782 girls.
Roughly four percent of the students who appeared for the exams applied to revise their results. While the percentage seems quite high, it compares well to internationally reputed exams like the GCE O and A Levels which are administered by Boards like Pearson and OCR in the UK. The most recent statistics show that almost 18 percent of the grades which were challenged in these internationally reputed exams represented almost 0.9 percent of the total GCE and GCSE grades awarded in that particular session (Data for June 2016).
So if almost four percent of our young students apply to have their marks improved, and there is a 25 percent chance of their marks changing, this would mean that 1 percent of the total marks awarded would indeed change. It is line with international figures. However more work must be done to ensure that the syllabus is kept up-to-date and not dependent on mere note memorization and recall. It must be updated with international syllabi to ensure that the students are capable of analytical involvement with their subjects.
