Advisory Council Member of Awami League (AL), also coordinator and spokesperson of the 14-party alliance Amir Hossain Amu said Shaheed Noor Hassan, an activist of Pro-democracy movement, was a milestone in the anti-authoritarian movement.
“Noor Hosain’s self-sacrifice in restoring democracy brought a new life into the movement and he was the milestone of the movement”, he told this a video conference on the occasion of ‘Shaheed Noor Hossain Day’ on Monday while praying for forgiveness of the departed souls of the anti-authoritarian movement martyrs.
Recalling the day, Amu said the movement started under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina when she declared to restore country’s democracy soon after returning to the country as Awami League president in 1981.
He said, “On 10 November 1987, political opponents with the leadership of Bangladesh Awami League came together for a blockade program called a “Dhaka Siege” (Dhaka Blockade) demanding an end to the rule of dictatorship”.
As a part of the blockade, Noor Hossain joined a rally in Dhaka and wrote a slogan “SwairacharNipatJak, GonotantraMukti Pak” (Let autocracybe destroyed, democracy be liberated) inscribed in white on his chest and back, he continued.
He said, “As soon as the leader of three-party alliance Sheikh Hasina’s car reached, Noor Hossain came and touched the feet of the leader to greet her. Later, he became a martyr.”
The AL leader also urged all to remain united under the leadership of Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina to take the country forward defeating all conspiracies.
