Staff Reporter :There is no democracy in the country and there is none to speak for the people. There is no opposition in the parliament. Dr. Akbar Ali Khan, former Adviser to Caretaker Government made this observations at a roundtable on ” Budget-2014 Tax Proposal,” at the Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday.It is not possible to play the role of opposition remaining in the government as ministers, he said. Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shyamol Dutta conducted the function, while advocate Jahangir Alam Chowdhury presented the key-note paper. Referring to imposition of tax , Dr. Khan said as it is not possible to impose tax on locally manufactured and imported goods equally as a result the country is deprived of revenue earnings. Had the government taken right strategy , it could further expand the size of the budget, he said. He said, it is no use talking much on budget. Planning Minister AHM Mostafa Kamal said that the country was moving ahead and by 2021 the country would become a middle income country.
