Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh Railway is going to introduce first ever non-stop train between Rajshahi and Dhaka with effect from April 14–the first day of the Bengali New Year 1426. The proposed train will leave Rajshahi at 7 .a.m. and arrive in Dhaka at 11 a.m., transpiring that it will take four hours only to travel between the two cities in four hours only at a speed of 140 kilometers per hour.
The name of the train has been Himsagar Express. The three other inter-city trains running between the two cities are Padma Express, the
Silk City Express and the Dhumketu Express. There are huge demands for the above trains and from that point the proposed train is likely to be acceptable despite high rate of tickets. It is Tk 375 for Shovan Chair, Tk. 719 for Snigdha, Tk. 863 for the Air-Conditioned Class and Tk. 1,288 for Berth Class. The latest one can be transformed into sleeping coach at night.
Bangladesh Railway’s administration is divided into two zones-West and East with headquarters in Dhaka and Rajshahi. The four divisions are Paksey, Lalmonirhat, Dhaka and Chittagong. Paksey on the bank of the river Padma is the largest division. Moreover, the world famous Hardinge Bridge is here.
Rail transport in Bangladesh began on 15 November 1862, when 53.11 km of 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) (broad gauge) line was opened between Darshana in Chuadanga District and Jogotee in Kushtia District. On 4 January 1885, a further 14.98 km 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3?8 in) (metre gauge) line was opened. In 1891, the Bengal Assam Railway was constructed with the assistance of the government. It was later run by the Bengal Assam Railway Company.
On 1 July 1895, two sections of metre gauge railway were constructed by English railway companies. One connected Chittagong and Comilla (149.89 km). The other connected Laksam and Chandpur (50.89 km).
There is no doubt that the proposed Himsagar Express will be able to draw passengers beyond the capacity and everything will go alright if there is no political interference for stoppage(s) and if the railway track is reformed and modernized.
The railway has been suffering from man power crisis, lack of trained hands, short of modernised tracks and lack of initiative to open the closed railway stations, whose number will be over 100.
The track on a railway or railroad, also known as the permanent way, is the structure consisting of the rails, fasteners, railroad ties and ballast, plus the underlying subgrade. It enables trains to move by providing a dependable surface for their wheels to roll upon. In general, railway track consist of ballast bed, steel rail, railway sleeper, railway fish plate, rail clip, railroad tie plate and other railway fasteners.
