The teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions on Sunday vowed not to go back home until the government brings them under the monthly pay order (MPO) scheme.
They also threatened to stage indefinite hunger strike if the government does not meet their demand soon.
The teachers and employees under the banner of “Non-MPO Educational Institutions’ Teachers and Employees Federation” started their hunger strike at about 9:00 am and continued till 3:00 pm.
General Secretary of the federation Dr Binoy Bhushan Roy said, “We observed the token hunger strike for Saturday and Sunday. The token hunger strike will continue side by side with the sit-in programme. We will announce indefinite hunger strike soon.”
“Some 50 to 60 of the total demonstrators fell sick in two days programme. Many of them took primary treatment in different hospitals and clinics in the capital,” Binoy Bhushan said.
After breaking the token hunger strike in the afternoon, they continued the sit in programme for the 15 consecutive days.
On December 31, 2017, teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions had started hunger strike unto death to press for their demand.
They called off their hunger strike on January 5 this year following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s assurance about meeting their demand for inclusion in the government’s Monthly Payment Order (MPO) system.
The teachers said the last MPO enlistment drive the government had conducted in 2010, and that the government immediately needs to enlist more teachers under the scheme.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry is preparing a list of non-MPO educational institutions for bringing them under MPO list. But it will be very difficult to announce the final list, as the ministry has no plan to declare all the non-MPO educational institutions as MPO institutions.
A top official of the ministry wishing anonymity told The New Nation that most of the ministers and MPs have sent letters to the Education Ministry to bring at least five institutions under MPO scheme.
“The ministry ordered the concern officials to prepare a list of the non-MPO educational institutions. The ministry will publish the list after getting nod from the concern ministries and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he said.
