The brickfield on the south bank of river Karnaphuli could not be evicted despite the directives of the State Minister for Land Ministry Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed due to stay order of the high court against eviction. District administration sources said High Court issued stay order on eviction of the said brickfield against the order of Department of Environment(DOF) for eviction. Meanwhile Land Minister at a meeting with the district and divisional officials at Chittagong circuit house onFebruary 9 last, ordered them to evict the BF immediately f rom the present location which polluting the environment surrounding areas.
Mentionable that international marine construction firm ‘ Malaysian Maritime & Dredging Corporation’ had been entrusted work of capital dredging and bank protection’ in port channel at a cost of Tk.230 crores. Local agent of the Malaysian company- Pacific Marine Service started dredging work on May 12, 2011 . Chief Executive officer of Pacific Marine Md. Abu Zafar beside the dredging work, installed this brickfield on govt land without the lawful permission of the district authority.
Centring the environment pollution, a team of DOE visited the site of BF and order to relocate the BF and fined with Tk.one crore. But the Pacific Marine filed an appeal against the order of DOE without paying the penalty amount and accordingly HC issued stay order over DOE order of eviction, sources said.
