The nomination papers of three mayor candidates submitted for contesting in the Sylhet City Corporation polls 2018 were cancelled after scrutinizing on Monday.
They are independent candidate Ehsanul Haque Taher, Kazi Jasim Uddin and Moktadir Hossain Tapadar, Returning Officer Md. Alimuzzaman told the media.
However, the nomination papers of Awami League’s Badar Uddin Kamran, BNP’s Ariful Haque Chowdhury, rebel candidate Badruzzaman Selim, Jamaat-e-Islami’s
City Ameer Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, Central Committee member of the Islamic Movement Dr. Moazzem Hossain and CPB-BSD nominated candidate Abu Zafar were found valid on the second day of scrutiny.
He said, the nomination papers were canceled as the 300 voters’ names, addresses and the voter numbers were not correct. Commission verified the addresses of the supporters, but did not find authentic. For that reason, commission cancelled their nomination papers.
On Sunday, the first day of scrutiny, the nomination papers of 10 councilor candidates, including four women, were cancelled. Among them, the nomination papers of seven candidates, including the lone female candidate, for the post of reserved councilors and general councillors, were cancelled.
Appeals can be lodged against the Commission’s decision on July 4 with the Divisional Commissioner. On the next three working days, the Divisional Commissioner will examine the appeals. The candidates intending to withdraw their candidatures can do it by appearing in the Returning Officer’s office.
