Police will crack down on unregistered motorbikes from June in view of the large number of those unregistered vehicles running across the country.
“No unregistered motorbikes will be allowed to run on the streets from June 3.”
The announcement made while Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque speaking at a press conference at police Headquarters in the capital on Sunday morning.
Police will take a tough stand in this regard as more than 90 percent of motorbikes all over Bangladesh are unregistered, the IGP said.
The police boss said: “Fifteen days will be given for completing the registration process from today (Sunday) with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in order to escape the curb down. The drivers will have to show the money receipt if the registration process is not completed within the given time.”
The law enforcers will seize the unregistered motorbikes if they are seen plying on roads and cases will be filed under the vehicle act,” the police boss said.
The government is losing a large amount of revenues from the unregistered motorcycles plying across the country, sources said.
With nameplates, “On Test” or “Applied for Registration (AFR)” attached to their bikes, the bikers are seen on traveling on the streets for years without any intention of getting their vehicles registered, they added.
