No tannery factory will be allowed to stay at Hazaribagh by December 31, said Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu.
The minister said this while visiting the Tannery zone at Savar on Tuesday.
The government will not provide any kind of utility services, including gas, electricity and water under the instruction of the High Court, warned the minister.
The construction work of Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at Savar will completed by December, he assured.
“The leather sector has a lot of potentiality, but it failed to flourish due to lack of environment-friendly industries. The government is sincerely working for the development of the sector,” Amu said.
The minister also underscored the need for producing quality footwear products to grab the international market.
The leaders of the leather sector demanded for ensuring sufficient security for the tannery zone. They urged the government to improve the roads and highway of the tannery zone.
Industry Secretary Md. Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan, Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Cairman Ahmed Hossain Khan, Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association (BFLLFEA) Chairman Enginner Abu Taher and Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) Chairman Md. Shahin Ahmed were present at the meeting.
Earlier, the High Court (HC) directed authorities concerned to take steps to close down tanneries at the city’s Hazaribagh within February next year to control the massive-scale environmental pollution by the industries.
