A thick layer of oil was seen floating on the Meghna River as the oil spillage could not be stopped till Tuesday after an oil-tanker capsized in the river at Raghurchar village in Gazaria upazila on Friday.
No initiative has been taken yet to prevent oil spillage till Tuesday.
On Friday, an oil-tanker of Bengal Electronics Ltd with crude oil sank in the river at Raghurchar village in Gazaria upazila after being hit by a storm, spilling crude oil on the river.
Local people said huge quantity of oil have been
spilling into the river since Friday, threatening the environment of the area.
Salamat Ullah, managing director of Bengal Electronics Ltd, claimed that there was a little quantity of oil inside the tank while the local people claimed that it was fully loaded with oil.
The oil spilled from the tank was seen floating in the river on Tuesday.
Besides, fish of various species were seen floating in different areas of the river.
Jamal Uddin, a resident of Raghurchar village, said the hyacinth and water several kilometers of the river turned blackish following spillage of oil. They could not use the river water in the everyday work and refrained for taking bath into the river, he said.
UP member Mukter Hossain, said there will be adverse effects of the oil if not removed from the spot immediately.
