Five more people, including two children, have died of dengue as the mosquito-borne disease was rapidly spreading across Bangladesh.
The deaths were reported between the Monday night and Wednesday morning from Dhaka, Noakhali, Khulna, Pabna and Faridpur.
In Dhaka, an eight-year-old girl died of dengue fever at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday, said Prof Dr Uttam Kumar Barua, director of the hospital.
Deceased Samia, 8, was admitted to the hospital on August 10 and passed away around 6:00am on Tuesday, the director said.
In Noakhali, Parash, a four-year-old boy, died on Monday night while he was being taken to Noakhali General Hospital after being diagnosed with dengue on Saturday morning.
Dr Morshed Alam Hiru, a child specialist at Laxmipur Sadar Hospital, said he suggested taking the boy to Noakhali General Hospital. “He died around 10pm,” Hiru said.
In Khulna, Rasel died at Khulna Medical College Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday, two days after being hospitalised, Civil Surgeon Abdur Razzak said.
In Pabna, a university admission seeker, died of dengue at Pabna Medical College Hospital on early Wednesday.
This is the first death incident from dengue in the district, reports our Pabna correspondent quoting hospital sources.
The victim Mosabbir Hossain Mahfuz, 20, son of Golam Mostofa, was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of dengue on Tuesday afternoon, Assistant Director of Pabna Medical College Hospital Dr Ranjan Kumar Dutta.
He died around 12.30am, said the hospital official.
In Faridpur, Tanjid Mollah, 9, son of Jahid Mollah, died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital at around 11:00am on Tuesday.
Confirming the death, Kamada Prasad Saha, director of the hospital, said Tanjid was admitted to hospital on Sunday and diagnosed with dengue.
Faridpur civil surgeon Enamul Haque said 373 dengue patients were undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals of the district as of Wednesday morning.
A total of 1,880 dengue patients were hospitalised within 24 hours to 8am on Wednesday. Of them, 755 have been admitted to different hospitals in Dhaka, the epicenter of the disease, and 1,125 across the country, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
A total of 1200 dengue cases were reported on Tuesday. Of them, 599 were in Dhaka and 601 in across the country.
The total number of dengue patients hospitalized so far is 46,351 with 7,869 currently undergoing treatment at hospitals around the country.
As on Wednesday, a total of 1,555 patients across the country have been discharged from the hospitals, according to the DGHS.
