A total of 716 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals across the country yesterday despite the measures taken by the authorities to contain the spread of dengue.
Among them, 300 patients were admitted in Dhaka and 416 in districts across the country.
Heath experts said that the dengue outbreak might not be contained due to adverse weather condition especially the rain that will lead to fresh breeding of Aedes larvae.
They advised the citizens to remain vigilant and personally inspect breeding-grounds of dengue in their houses.
Prof Dr Sanya Tahmina, line director (communicable disease control) of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said, it is very important to destroy the source of Aedes mosquitoes to reduce the number of patients. But now it become quite tough because of Aedes mosquitoes spread all over the country.
“People’s awareness and steps taken to destroy possible sources of Aedes mosquitoes were the main causes for the decease of dengue patients at hospitals,” said Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research Director Professor Meerjady Sabrina Flora.
Meanwhile, a housewife died of dengue while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Shapla Khatun, wife of Hasibul Islam of Baneswar area of Puthia upazila.
Dr Saiful Fardoush, deputy director of RMCH, said Shapla was admitted to the hospital one week ago. Her kidneys became crippled as she died.
“A total of 35 patients infected with dengue are taking treatment at the hospital,” said Dr Saiful Fardoush.
The Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), in a press release issued on Monday, said the number of patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals in the country were 3,091.
As many as 1,522 patients are currently receiving treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in Dhaka, whereas 1,569 people are undergoing treatment outside Dhaka, the DGHS data said.
A total of 60 dengue patients have died across Bangladesh from January 1 till September 9, according to their own collected data. However, the unofficial death toll is reported to be at 141, so far.
Since January 1 till September 9, a total of 77,230 people have been affected by dengue.
Among those admitted, a total of 73,942 have been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after treatment.
