Staff Reporter :Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah has said Awami League and BNP will not be allowed to hold programmes at the Suhrawardy Udyan in the city on January 5.He made the assertion while addressing a programme at DMP office marking the second anniversary of the DMPnews, an online news portal, on Sunday afternoon. The ruling Awami League and its arch-rival BNP have announced programmes at Suhrawardy Udyan ahead of the second anniversary of the much-talked January 5 general elections. The Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Zone and the Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station have been asked to submit a report regarding the current scenario of law and order condition in their areas. The DMP Commissioner said: “We cannot give permission for any programme or rally that might pose a threat to the security of the public.”He, however, said they would decide about the permission of the programmes after getting the report.Replying to a query about change of venue, he said: “If one of the parties decides to hold their programme peacefully in some other places then police don’t not have any reason to stop them but if any one tries to conduct any subversive activity, then we will not spare them. We will become tougher.”In a media release on Saturday, the ruling Awami League named 18 venues for rallies in the capital on January 5 — one of those being the Suhrawardy Udyan.Earlier in the day, the BNP announced its plans to hold a rally at the same venue and said Chairperson Khaleda Zia will address it.
