UNB, Dhaka :
Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder on Monday told Parliament that there was no influence from ruling Awami League or any presence of syndicate during rice and paddy procurement this year.
“The procurement of rice and paddy used to take place every year. But the procurement process was not so fair in the past like it was this year,” he claimed replying to a supplementary question from independent MP Rezaul Karim Bablu (Bogura-7).
“Upazila Nirbahi Officers and Deputy Commissioners went to their respective areas and got involved in the procurement process,” he said.
“I can say unequivocally that there was no political influence in the procurement process. Rather, the party leaders and activists have cooperated in this regard. There was no presence of syndicate either,” the minister said.
He sought cooperation from MPs in the procurement process of rice and paddy to fulfill the target of government procurement of rice and food.
In his supplementary question, Bablu said farmers are not getting fair prices of their produces as the procurement process of rice and paddy is controlled by a syndicate.
In reply to another question, the minister informed the House that the government will spend Tk 1040 crore for procuring 4 lakh tonnes of paddy from the farmers during the current boro season.
“The government has decided to procure 4 lakh tonnes of paddy during the boro season of 2019 at Tk 26,000 per tonne,” Sadhan Chandra said.
So far, the Food Ministry has procured 79,463 tonnes of paddy at Tk 206.60 crore, he added.
