Staff Reporter :
There will be no Primary Education Completion (PEC) Examination for Class V students from this year.
Primary and Mass Education Minster Mostafizur Rahman said it in a press briefing in the Secretariat on Tuesday.
“There will be no terminal examination at the end of Class V from this year. We will send the proposal soon to the Cabinet for scrapping the PEC examination,” the Minister said while talking to the reporters. Scrapping of the examination requires Cabinet approval as it was introduced in 2009 as per the Cabinet’s decision, he said.
The primary education cycle in the country has been upgraded to the eight grades and the entire process has been brought under the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
The minister said the eight graders henceforth have to appear in the PEC examination as the government has upgraded the primary education up to Class VIII.
Education Minister, Nurul Islam Nahid announced that the government had decided to elevate the level of primary education up to Class VIII from next year on May 18.
Parents and guardians of the current fifth graders demanded cancellation of the PEC from current year, not from the next year.
Even a writ petition was filed with the High Court as to why the PEC would not be cancelled from current year. The court issued a rule in this regard.
“We’ve talked about it, there will be no PEC examination at fifth grade from this year,” the Minister said.
“Only formalities remained in implementation of the decision and that the proposal will be forwarded for Cabinet approval.
While asked about the scholarships being given on the basis of results of terminal exams, the Minister said, “We will certainly have an evaluation after class five. We are working on it.”
