UNB, Dhaka :
Apprehending that a vested quarter is behind the recent planned killing of two foreign nationals, Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday affirmed that no one will be able to destabilise the country by carrying out such acts.
“Bangladesh has consolidated its position on the international stage in such a way that no one will be able to destabilise the country with such incidents,” she said. The Prime Minister was addressing a function after inaugurating the newly-built academic building (Sheikh Hasina Complex) of Defence Services Command and Staff College at the auditorium of the Sheikh Hasina complex at Mirpur Cantonment.
Seeking cooperation, Sheikh Hasina also urged all, including the members of the Armed Forces, to remain alert so that no one could deter the country’s pace of development. Referring to the recent killings of two foreign nationals, one Italian national in Dhaka and another Japanese citizen in Rangpur, Hasina said the Japanese national had converted to Islam, but he was killed. “We’ve already condemned the killing and taken steps for hunting down those involved in the incidents and then ensuring their punishment.” She also said, “In the wake of such incidents it appears to us these are not mere accidents, but a vested quarter is carrying out such incidents in a planned way.” The Prime Minister said
whenever Bangladesh achieves something and is internationally acclaimed such incident is unleashed to tarnish the country’s image.
Mentioning that the country has to tackle terrorism, militancy and conspiracy every now and then, Hasina said, “We have to spend energy and working hours on tackling conspiracies…if we didn’t have to do that then it would have been possible to develop and prosper the country further.”
Due to the addition of new dimension to the present global security situation, the Prime Minister said, the role and scope of duty of the Armed Forces has increased a lot. “So, in the changing context, necessary revision and addition of newer subjects to the academic and training programmes of the Armed Forces are needed.”
Recalling the killings of 59 army officials in the Peelkhana carnage on February 25-26, 2009, the Prime Minister said her government took steps for holding the trial of the then BDR members engaged in the mutiny that taken place soon after formation of her previous government in 2009.
She also alleged that her government had to face various barriers in holding the trial proceedings and alleged that the BNP-Jamaat-backed lawyers had stood in favour of over 850 accused of BDR killings.
Referring to the co-chairing of an UN event on peace keeping at the just concluded 70th session of the UNGA, the Prime Minster said she had promised there to provide as much as female peacekeepers since Bangladesh is always ready in this regard.
She mentioned that the work for framing the draft national defence policy and Army Forces Goal 2030 is ongoing in line with the development pace of the Armed Forces. Earlier on her arrival at Mirpur DOHS, Sheikh Hasina was received by Army Chief General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq and Quartert Master General of Bangladesh Army Litenant General Anwar Hussain.
At the function, the keys of flats were handed over to Mirpur DOHS among the martyred members of Army at Peelkhana Carnage and martyred members of UN peace keeping missions and that of those killed in other accidents.
