The Election Commission (EC) could deploy army under existing laws with no magistracy power to hold the 11th Parliamentary polls peacefully, said HT Imam, Political Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister.
He was briefing reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner and Commission members at Election Bhaban in the evening yesterday.
“Awami League is not against deployment of army for holding peaceful election. It is the sovereignty of the Commission (EC). Army could be deployed under existing laws,” he told reporters.
He also said, announcement of schedule is completely under the jurisdiction of the EC and Awami League is ready to accept its decision.
HT Imam led a 16-member delegation of ruling Awami League in talks with the EC on Wednesday over holding of a free, fair and inclusive election.
He also expressed optimism that the upcoming national election will be inclusive participated by all the political parties.
He said foreigners must be registered as observers to monitor election and EC should ensure this.
“A foreigner cannot claim to be an election observer after coming here with tourist visa,” he said.
In course of his comments over a series of meeting between EC and different political parties, HT Imam alleged that the Jatiya Oikyfront behaved roughly with the commission chair and members which is totally unexpected.
“They (Oikyfront leaders) raise finger at EC chair and members during their meeting, spoke in a way to undermine EC and tried to frighten the commission chair and members by various comments,” he said, adding that, “Behavior like this is totally unexpected.”
“Their words were abusive, objectionable. People will give reply to them by mandates in election,” he alleged.
