The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), KM Nurul Huda, on Thursday said that there is no need of Army deployment in the forthcoming Rangpur City Corporation polls.
“The election in Rangpur City Corporation will be held in a free, fair and credible manner. We see that there is a festive mood in the election. There is no need of Army deployment in the polls,” he said.
The CEC was talking to a group of journalists after a meeting with the various law enforcement agencies, and local government and election commission officials at the Divisional Commissioner’s office in Rangpur.
He also said currently mobile court is operating under the leadership of 22 magistrates and from tomorrow there will be a mobile court in every ward.
The CEC said also that if anyone violates electoral rule of law, then action would be taken against him or her immediately.
He ensured that the EC would take all sort of measures to hold a free and fair election. He said that four-tier security measures would be taken during the day.
The CEC said that Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) would be used in one polling station but it depends on the local people. “If voters want the EVM, then it will be used, otherwise not,” he said.
On the other hand, the BNP yesterday alleged that no level playing field has been created ahead of the Rangpur city polls.
“The ruling party candidate is showing muscle every moment ahead of Rangpur City polls. We are demanding Army deployment during the polls for free and fair polls,” said BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi while addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office on the day.
