The bikers will have to obtain movement pass from the police administration if they want to ply motorbikes in the highways ahead of the Eid journey.
Without having any movement pass, the bikers are not allowed in the highways during Eid, police said.
Such decision has been taken in order to bring discipline in the streets and prevent the loss of lives due to reckless riding of motorcycles.
In order to oversee the movement of the motorbikes, police have already set up check posts on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway and Dhaka-Chattagram highway.
Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Imran Hossain said motorbikes are not allowed in the highways but if the bikers can show movement pass or
explain the necessity, then they are allowed. The BRTA circular said that motorbikes of a district are not allowed to ply in another district without having logical ground. If anybody can show the movement pass, the biker is allowed to ply.
Superintendent police of Dhaka district Maruf Hossain said, “We will follow the BRTA rules and regulations. We have the format of the movement pass. If anybody applies for it, pass will be issued.”
In order to obtain a movement pass, the biker has to fill the form with motorbike registration number, specific route of travel, date and time, number of travelers and mobile number of the rider.
Police sources said, the bikers can obtain movement pass from the highway police and district police administration. None will be allowed to ply motorbikes without movement pass, it added.
The Roads and Highways Department decided to prohibit motorcycles from inter-district travel for seven days – before and after Eid.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting at the Road Transport Ministry at the Secretariat on July 3.
Earlier, on June 27, the Bridges Division had prohibited motorcycles from plying on Padma Bridge and Dhaka-Mawa Expressway following the death of two people in a motorcycle accident on the Padma Bridge on the first day of opening for traffic.
