Library is the heart of any educational institution. It makes one a complete human being by gathering knowledge. So every educational institution should provide the best library facility for the betterment of the scholars. But the Jagannath University (JnU) library is in a macabre condition. The extremely poor condition is hampering the students’ habit of reading.
More than 19,000 students are studying in the university of which most of them are from not very well to do families. They cannot buy all the books needed to continue their study. The central library is the only way for them.
The university was set up on October 20, 2005 under an act passed by the national parliament. But the authority of JnU has been failing to perk up the condition of the library over the last nine years. The authority has been playing a silent role to look up the sleazy condition of the library.
At present, the central library has an accommodation of 150 chairs to sit on whereas the students of JnU is more than19 thousands.
The library has about 12,000 books, a good number of them are too old, with pages torn off, which are too minimal to meet the requirement of the students of 31 departments. Sometimes students find books in the catalogue but not in the library.
Especially, most Science Faculty students are dependable on Nilkhet market or on public library to get recent research collection books.
“We have to face a lot of problems to get a new book or a pamphlet and maximum books are out of syllabus”, some girl students stated with atone of anguish.
A personnel of the library of JnU, who is unwilling to divulge his name, stated, “The latest edition of imperative text books, journals, magazines are not available in the library. The library problem will amplify if crucial steps are not taken instantly”.
“Now central library of the university is used for a safe dating spot”, the personnel affixed. Librarian Prof Dr Priobroto Paul affirmed, ‘We will try our heart and soul to get better the library condition and also hope that we will able to present our beloved students a multimedia library within a very short moment.’
