BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said Khaleda Zia will be freed through the legal process, not by anybody’s compassion.
“Khaleda Zia won’t be freed by the mercy of anybody. She will surely be released on bail as it’s her fair right to get bail,” he said.
Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was speaking at a human-chain programme organised by the Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding the release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.
He said the government will not be able to keep Khaleda Zia in jail for a long time as people will free her through a movement.
The BNP leader called upon the people of all walks of life and the democratic political parties to get united to ‘restore democracy’ in the
country and force the government to free Khaleda Zia from jail through a movement.
On Wednesday, BNP MPs urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit hospital to see ailing Chairperson Khaleda Zia for herself and take steps for her release on bail.
“We the seven MPs call upon the Leader of the House and Prime Minister to visit BNP chief Khaleda Zia at the hospital. We are sure if you visit her, you will feel the compassion for her,” said BNP MP GM Siraj.
The BNP secretary general hoped that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return home from India with good news about ensuring the country’s fair share of water from the Teesta and other common rivers.
“We also hope that the border killing will come to an end,” he said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went to New Delhi on Thursday morning to join the World Economic Forum (WEF) Summit there and hold meetings with top Indian leaders.
Fakhrul said, Prime Minister had gone to India and the people expected that Bangladesh’s outstanding problems with it will be resolved since the government claims to have very strong friendly relations with the neighbouring country.
“But we got frustrated every time as the Prime Minister had returned home giving India everything generously without resolving our major problems,” the BNP leader observed.
He said the killing of Bangladeshis along the border by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) is yet to be stopped. “The problem regarding the Teesta water-sharing has not been resolved either. Instead, we’re now facing floods as all the Farakka gates have been opened.”
Fakhrul voiced concern over various remarks by the Indian ruling party leaders over sending the people left out of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in India’s Assam to Bangladesh.
“We think no one of our citizen (permanently) went to India. But we get worried when Indian ministers made different remarks about pushing people across the border,” he said.
BNP Vice-Chairman Dr AJM Zahid Hossain, journalist leader Ruhul Amin Ghazi, Co-information Secretary Kader Gani Chowdhury and BNP Co-publicity Secretary Shamimur Rahman were present at the meeting, among others while BNP Vice Chairman and journalist leader Shawkat Mahmud was in the chair.
