BNP on Saturday alleged that the prices of essentials are shooting up for lack of strong market monitoring by the government.
“The prices of essentials are skyrocketing. The government is not properly monitoring the market. The prices of the essentials would not have hiked in such a way had the government been active in monitoring the market well before Ramzan,” said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
He brought the allegation at a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
The BNP leader urged the government to be active in controlling the surging prices and assuaging the sufferings of people.
Mentioning that the Commerce Minister assured people that they would strongly arrest the price hike during Ramzan, Ripon said the ministers failed to keep his promise.
“Still there’s time, if the Commerce Minister turns tough and his institutions play due role, it will be possible to contain the growing price hike of commodities. We’re waiting to see the visible efforts of the minister to arrest the price hike and assuage public sufferings,” he said.
Ripon, also BNP’s International Affairs secretary, deplored that raising the prices of essentials during Ramzan by traders has become a culture and common practice. “We should discard this culture.”
The BNP leader also urged the businesspeople not to hike the commodity prices considering the convenience of those fasting.
Ripon also alleged that adulterated foods have flooded the markets on the occasion of Ramzan as there is no visible anti-adulteration drive by magistrates to check the male practice by the unscrupulous traders.
He demanded the government immediately intensify its anti-adulteration drive to check health hazards caused by the adulterated and toxic food.
Mentioning the country’s political situation now normal as their party is not on movement, Ripon urged the government to immediately release BNP leaders and activists, including party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
