No leniency towards anyone : Returning Officer

Chittagong’s top election officer has promised tough measures against anyone violating the polls code during the ensuing city corporation elections.
.Returning Officer Abdul Baten on Friday ( yesterday) said they would not “bow to anyone”.
The warning came during electoral symbol allocation in the city.”We want to organise an election where voters will be able to exercise their rights properly.”Stern legal steps will be taken against those breaking the law, whoever they are,” he said addressing the aspirants.The ruling Awami League has endorsed AJM Nasir Uddin while the BNP has lent support to outgoing mayor M Manjur Alam for the mayor’s office.
Baten said the aspirants won’t be allowed to run election campaign using the ‘Pahela Baishakh’ (Bangla new year) celebrations
He explained that no one can take out roadshows or distribute t-shirts or gifts that have the candidates’ electoral symbols.Six executive magistrates are already at working in the city to prevent poll code violation, he added.
Nasir and Alam kicked off their campaign on Wednesday with a slew of promises to make Chittagong a better city.
The returning officer reminded the candidates that poll offences carry a minimum two-year imprisonment and a maximum of seven years’.”The offences are non-bailable… Punishments will be meted out if necessary,” Baten warned.
