The investigation into the two cases, including murder of Jagriti Prakashani owner Faisal Arefin Dipan and attack on Shuddhoswar owner Ahmedur Rashid Tutul, has been transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Tuesday.
“Plainclothes police have been assigned to investigate the two cases in connection with Saturday’s attacks on two publishers that left one dead,” Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muntasir Alam told The New Nation.
The two cases were filed on Monday, one with Shahbagh Police Station and the other with Mohammadpur Police Station.
The members of law enforcing and intelligence agencies are yet to make any significant headway in the investigation into the murder of Jagriti Prakashani owner Faisal Arefin Dipan and attack on Shuddhoswar owner Ahmedur Rashid Tutul. Bloggers Tareque Rahim and Ranadipam Basu were also injured in the attack at Shuddhoswar’s Lalmatia office. “No arrest was made till Tuesday evening in this connection,” Muntasir Alam.
When contacted, a number of senior officials wishing anonymity said they could not make any headway in the investigations into the two cases as they are yet to get any clue to the killers involved with the murders.
“The members of law enforcing and intelligence agencies are still in the dark about their (killers) hideouts,” the official said. Besides, all the units of Bangladesh Police, including Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), have been working to unearth the mysteries behind the killings amid the mounting pressure at home and abroad for prompt action against the culprits involved with the gruesome murder.
Meanwhile Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Tuesday said, in the guise of militant organisations, the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami are involved with such gruesome murder.
“In the name of Ansarullah Bangla Team, IS (Islamic State) and al-Qaeda, the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami are involved with such attack,” he told journalists at his Secretariat office.
Dr Razia Rahman, wife of slain publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan, filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station in connection with the murder of her husband while publisher Ahmedur Rashid Chowdhury Tutul lodged the other case with Mohammadpur Police Station in connection with the attack on him and two other writers.
Dipan, 45, proprietor of ‘Jagriti’ publication house, was stabbed to death by miscreants on the 2nd floor of Aziz Super Market in the city’s Shahbagh area on Saturday.
Ahmedur Rashid Tutul, publisher of ‘Shuddhoswar Prokashoni’, and two writers namely Sudeep Kumar Roy Barman alias Ranadeep Basu and Tareque Rahim were stabbed by some unidentified miscreants in the city’s Lalmatia area on the same day.
Ganojagoran Mancha will take out a coffin procession towards the Home Ministry tomorrow (Thursday) to protest the killing Dipon and attack on other freethinkers.
Leaders and activists of Ganojagoran Mancha will also hold rally at Shahbagh on Friday.
