Although 10 years have been passed following the establishment of Jagannath University, no convocation has yet been held.
Since the establishment of JnU, no mentionable attempts were seen to arrange convocation. Rather, the university authority decided to give certificates to its 30 thousand students without any kind of formalities or convocation.
A notification regarding this was named on November last year from the office of the Controller of Examination of JnU. It mentioned that the students admitted under the university and under the National University (NU) would be able to take the certificates. The certificate will be awarded without any kind of formalities or convocation.
JnU Teachers Association (JnUTA) General Secretary Professor Dr. Abul Hossain said that as students of a public university, it’s a basic right to have convocation.
‘Moreover, convocation enhances the fame of a university, as well it is one of the vital functions of the university to award degrees to students and honorary graduates by arranging convocation’, said Dr Hossain.
Nevertheless, students expressed their dissatisfaction with such declaration saying a major expectation of the university life is a black gown and certificate taking formally.
Sujaul Islam Babu, a post-graduate student of the department of Psychology said, “Convocation is a highly-desired moment in the student life. Regular convocation is necessary to step forward with the reminiscence of the happy moments of university life. We hope that the current administration would provide us with the opportunity of receiving the long-cherished convocation.”
JnU Chatra Union President Zahidul Islam Sazib said that for the negligence of the university authority, the students of JnU are deprived of convocation.
‘In fact, JnU authority does not cordial to arrange convocation’, said Sazib.
JnU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mizanur Rahman said, ‘Though the university is the largest to its population but the smallest to its area among other public universities, so it is highly tough to arrange a convocation ceremony in a small range as many guests will partake the programme including President of the country, who is also Chancellor of the university’.
‘Despite our deficiency, we try heart and soul to arrange a convocation as soon as possible’, said Dr Mizan.
However, Jagannath University (JnU) was set up on October 20, 2005 under an act passed by the national parliament.
