The British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Robert Chatterton Dickson, on Sunday said that incident of clashes should not occur during electoral campaign and hoped for a fair Dhaka city polls scheduled to be held on February 1.
He came up with the remark after meeting BNP-nominated mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain at his residence in city’s Gopibag area in the afternoon.
Regarding the clash during Ishraque Hossain’s campaign yesterday, Robert Chatterton Dickson said, “No clashes should occur during electoral campaign. We do not expect clash. I hope everyone will lead a peaceful election.”
The envoy said, “I would like to continue the meeting with all the mayoral candidates. As part of that, I came to meet BNP-nominated candidate. This election is very important. Everyone expects it to be peaceful, free and fair. I hope, this will be a fair election. We expect a fair election.”
“I spoke to the Election Commissioner. I have learned about how they are conducting elections,” he added.
Mentioning that the mayoral election is important for the country, Robert Chatterton Dickson also said he has already discussed election issues with Awami League candidates.
He said the country wants the elections to the two Dhaka city corporations to be held in a fair and credible manner.
The envoy also hoped that the polls would be held in a congenial atmosphere where voters will be able to cast their votes going to the polling stations.
Earlier on Thursday night, the British envoy met BNP’s mayoral candidate in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) polls Tabith Awal at his Banani office.
