UNB, Dhaka :The overall flashflood situation in the country’s northeastern districts, triggered by incessant rainfall andonrush of water from the upstream hilly areas, remained unchanged on Thursday, leaving thousands of people marooned.According to reports reaching the UNB news desk, the people of over 100 villages in Bishwambarpur, Tahirpur and Doarabazar upazilas of Sunamganj that have been inundated over the last couple of days are suffering for short supply of drinking water and food.Besides, many thatched houses have been washed away by the floodwater while some 2,000 hectare paddy fields have gone under water for the second time over the last one month. But, no government relief reached the flood-affected areas of the district so far.The Surma River was flowing 28 cm above its red mark across the district while 34 mm rainfall was recorded between 10 am on Tuesday and 10 am on Thursday. In Sherpur, water receded from the upstream areas but it drained into low-lying areas in the downstream, inundating 25 villages in Jhinaigati upazila. Jhinaigati upazila nirbahi officer Mozammel Haque said five union parishads in the district have been inundated, sending about 2,000 hectare paddy fields under water.Although the flood situation in Nalitabari upazila has improved over the last couple of days, the breakage of a 150-metre-long portion of the two-lane Nakulgaon land port road has led to the suspension of communications in the area.About 3,400 hectares of paddy field in Nalitabir upazila still remained under water, according to officials at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
