It is a disgraceful to note that not a single Bangladeshi university has been included on the list of top 100 institutions in the QS Asia University Rankings released for 2022.This year, National University of Singapore achieved the first position, while Peking University (Beijing), and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, the secured second and the third positions respectively.
On the other hand, strong representation was seen from universities in South Korea as well as Taiwan, both countries secured higher ranking and included QS Asia on the list of top 100 higher academic institutions’ ranking. Thus, China tops the list with 126 out of the 687 universities, followed by India and Japan in second and third place, according to last year’s rankings. Dhaka University, which was earlier gloriously termed as “Oxford” is seen as the 142nd on the list. Moreover, no other university in our country is among the top 200 universities on the QS ranking list. Earlier, Dhaka University secured 127th position in 2019 and 135th position in 2021 and 2020.
The 2022 ranking was prepared based on 11 key indicators, including academic and employer reputations, the number of staff with PhDs and the percentage of international students. Published annually since 2009, the QS Asia University Ranking highlights top universities in Asia each year. The methodology used to make the ranking is similar to that used for the QS World University Rankings.
According to educationists, our public universities are busy with teachers’ politics instead of researching. Besides, most private universities, in many ways, do business in the name of higher education. Globally, almost all countries allocate the highest budget for the education sector, but it is really a sad phenomenon and sorry to state that in our country budgetary allocation is almost negligible, they maintained in their statement while highlighting the position in this direction.
We believe, the relevant functionaries of the government and respective universities will strengthen their stride to bring a fundamental change with greater mission and vision for enhancing the standard of the country’s higher education in line with global changes.
