The Supreme Court has again deferred the date of hearing on the review petition filed by death row convict Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami. The new date is May 3.
The four-member bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha on Sunday fixed the date on account of the court’s summer vacation from April 14 to May 2.
Nizami’s prime counsel Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain also submitted a petition seeking four weeks’ time. He prayed to the court to shift the date for hearing citing his personal difficulties.
The SC on April 3 fixed April 10 for hearing on the review petition of Nizami deferring the date by one week. The review petition was enlisted as item number 19 on the Sunday’s cause list.
On March 29, Barrister Najib Momen, son of Nizami, submitted the 70-page review petition with the Appellate Division. In the petition, 46 grounds were mentioned seeking the release of the convict.
Earlier on March 15, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued the death warrant for Nizami following the release of full text of SC’s verdict.
On January 6, the four-member bench of the apex court upheld the death sentence of the Jamaat Ameer for the wartime crimes, including genocide and murder of intellectuals. The apex court upheld his death penalty for three of the four counts of charges while he was acquitted for the rest one.
On October 29 in 2014, the ICT-1 sentenced Nizami to death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War. Nizami filed an appeal with the SC on November 23 in 2014 challenging the death sentence and claimed himself innocent and sought to be cleared of the charges.
