At least nine vehicles including trucks were gutted as a freight car caught fire in a ferry on the Ilisha Laxmipur route on the Meghna River in Bhola early Thursday.
Two units of the fire service doused fire after two hours of frantic effort. However, no casualties were reported.
Sujan Chandra Paul, naval police in charge of Ilisha Ferry Ghat, said the Kalmilata ferry left Maju Chowdhury Hat in Laxmipur for Ilisha in Bhola at 2:00 am. Suddenly, a fire broke out in a pickup van on the ferry in the mid-river around 4:00 am. On information, the fire service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
It has been initially thought that the fire originated from the pickup van on the ferry due to cigarettes.
