Covid-19 Pandemic: Nine more die, 306 test positive in 24hrs

Nine more died of coronavirus infection, while 306 people tested positive of the virus in the last 24 hours, IEDCR said on Saturday.
The death toll now stands at 84, while the total number of infected has reached 2,144, said Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, Director, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), in an online press briefing in Dhaka.
She said that eight more people recovered from the infection during the same period. So far, the total number of recovery is 66.
Of the deceased, four were above 61 years, one was between 51-60, three between 41-50 and the age of another could not be known, Dr Sabrina said.
Among the newly infected, 32 percent are from Dhaka city.
In the last 24 hours, she said, 2,114 samples were tested across the country.
Professor Sabrina said that 564 people are taking treatments in hospitals across the country.
“Eleven of the patients are in ICUs,” she said.
Of the nine deceased, six are from Dhaka, two from Narayanganj and one was from Savar.
“Most of the infected people are in Dhaka, 32 percent of them got affected in the past 24 hours.
Gazipur is bearing the burden of the most number of infections followed by Narshingdi and Kishoreganj,” Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora said. Analysing the estimate of the 24 hours until 8am on Saturday, the IEDCR director said those aged between 21 and 30 were most infected by the virus.
“27 per cent of the cases are from the 21-30 age group, followed by 22 per cent from the 31-40 age group,” she added.
The third most vulnerable group comprises people in their 40s as they make up 19 per cent of the total count.
In addition, four of the deceased are sexagenarians. Of the remaining deceased, one was in the 50s while two others were aged between 41 and 50, and one between 31 and 40. The age of one of the victims could not be confirmed.
Meanwhile, Professor Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General (Administration) of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said there are 19 PCR laboratories active in Covid-19 testing across the country currently including the one in Jashore University of Science and Technology.
