The Holy Quran was not demeaned by Abu Yunus Md Shahidunnabi Jewel who was beaten and later burnt to death, said Al Mahmud Fauzul Kabir, head of the three-member National Human Rights Commission’s investigation team.
Kabir, also the director of NHRC’s complaint and investigation, said, the barbaric incident occurred after rumour of demeaning the Holy Quran was spread.
The team visited Burimari Jam-e Masjid,
Union Parishad office and the crime scene and took testimony of locals including the eyewitnesses, Kabir said at a press briefing held at the union parishad, our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports.
“After talking to the imam and khadem of the mosque, we are convinced that the deceased did not demean the Holy Quran,” he said.
He said they are conducting the investigation into three parts and trying to figure out whether the murder was pre-planned. “We will submit our report within the next seven days,” he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Rahsin Kabir and Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Tapas Sarkar accompanied the investigation team.
