Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Professor Mizanur Rahman on Thursday termed the recent comments of the Inspector General of Police about the chairman “indecent” and “undesirable.”
“The IGP said that having no knowledge about the whole issue I have passed the remarks on arrests by police. This is not true. Surely, the Prime Minister gave her instruction not to harass any innocent people when law enforcers conduct their countrywide special drive against militants,” Mizanur Rahman said after visiting the Dhaka Central Jail in Bakshi Bazar on Thursday. The NHRC chief told a group of journalists, there are many problems in the Dhaka Central Jail. These are serving of substandard food, shortage of living space for inmates and inadequate resources for training female inmates.
He visited the jail after receiving complaints that the Dhaka Central Jail abounds with many problems.
The jail authorities assured him that the problems would be solved with the shifting of the jail in the new compound at Keraniganj soon, Professor Mizanur Rahman added.
On June 12, Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque at a meeting with eminent personalities in Chittagong criticised the NHRC chief for his statement given in the media that arrest trade has been going on in the name of drives against militants.
