UNB, Dhaka :
Observing that it is a sheer violation of labor rights that tea gardens workers are not paid their wages for working on weekly holidays, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman on Sunday said the state has to be answerable for violating the rights of the workers.
“Tea garden workers are not paid their wages for working on weekly holidays. It is sheer violation of labor rights. The state has to be put on the dock for that. They have to be held accountable,” he said.
Mizanur Rahman came up with the remarks while addressing a discussion on
Human Rights and Socio-Economic development of Tea-Community organized by Indigenous Social Development organization and tea workers at Jatiya Press Club. This discussion came as a protest against the government’s decision to establish a special economic zone on 511 acres of lands in tea states at Chandpur in Habiganj Upazila.
Observing that the state always shows valor against the weak, he questioned the point of showing bravery by snatching the rights of landless and marginal people. If the state would stand against the land grabbers, then people would believe the state was powerful.
Noting that being a middle income country doesn’t mean that workers’ lands and rights will be snatched away, Dr. Mizanur Rahman questioned the benefits of being a middle income country if workers remain deprived of their rights. NHRC chief urged government not to build any structure occupying workers’ home and land.
