NHRC boss calls for sanctions against Myanmar

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque has laid emphasis on imposing sanctions on Myanmar by the international community to resolve the Rohingya crisis.
He said, the international community should put more pressure on Myanmar for safe return of Rohingyas to their homeland.
The national rights body chief was addressing a discussion in the city on Tuesday.
National Human Rights Commission, Bangladesh arranged the event titled ‘Rohingya Influx and its Impact on Locality: Role of Stakeholders for Durable Solutions’ in a city hotel.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque, UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka Mia Seppo, Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mohammad Abul Kalam, UNHCR’s Regional Representative James Lynch and Coordinator, Nijera Kori Khushi Kabir, among others, spoke.
He said, the international community should impose sanctions and cut economic ties with Myanmar for its “widespread, systematic and shockingly brutal” attacks on the Rohingya, as well as decades of discrimination and persecution.
Shahidul Haque said, Bangladesh is engaged in “multi-prone diplomatic” efforts to resolve the crisis.
He said, the deal signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar clearly calls for a safe, sustainable and voluntary return of Rohingyas to their homeland.
Home Secretary (Public Security Division) Mostafa Kamal Uddin said if the Rohingya crisis prolongs it would create an adverse impact on the security situation as the refugees might be victims of radicalisation and extremism.
UN Resident Coordinator Mia Sappo expressed her frustration over the under-funding in regards to the international commitment over humanitarian response to Rohingya refugees.
