The registration of 2,170 Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) is likely to be cancelled for failure to comply with the directive of NGO Bureau, official sources said.
As per a letter of Information Commission (IC), the Bureau asked registered NGOs twice to appoint information officer. But the concerned NGOs ignored it. Information Commission sent a letter signed by its Secretary Mohammad Farhad Hossain to the Bureau asking it to serve notice to the NGOs to employ information officer to ensure transparency.
AKM Moazzem Hossain, Deputy Director of NGO Affairs Bureau under Prime Minister’s Office, sent letters to 2, 294 NGOs 0n October 2 in 2013 asking them to appoint information officer in each organisation within 15 days.
But out of 2,294, only 124 complied with the directive of the NGO Bureau so far, sources added.
Moazzem Hossain said, “We also served them notice last month. Despite our request, they did not comply with our directive. Now, we have no option but to call off their registration or impose ban on their activities”.
