Speakers at a function said non-government organisation (NGO) can play a vital role to check abuse of narcotics creating much awareness among the people. “As the NGO officials work at grassroots level of the society, they can motivate the people about the adverse impact of narcotics to build a drug-free society”, they said.
They came up with the comments on the 19th instant while addressing a workshop on role of NGOs in preventing narcotics abuse.District administration and district narcotics control office in Gaibandha jointly organized the workshop in the conference room of the District Collectorate, Gaibandha. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Goutam Chandra Pal addressed the workshop as the chief guest and superintendent of police (SP) M. Masrukur Rahman Khaled and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon were present as the special guests.
With additional director of Rajshahi division, Department of Narcotics Control (DNC), M. Mujibur Rahman Patwari in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by additional district magistrate Rokhsana Begum, DNC official Abdul Mazid, journalists KM Rezaul Haque and Abu Jafar Sabu, NGO representatives Amal Kumar Dam, Suruz Haque Liton, Mohirul Islam Tushar, Ashraful Alam, and Saddam Hossain Paban, while media personality Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman was the moderator.
DC Goutam Chandra Pal emphasized the need for building social movement against narcotics and illegal drug trading to build an enlighten nation. He also sought whole hearted cooperation of the media personalities and asked the NGO representatives to come forward with positive attitude to build narcotics free society and to attain the cherished goal of the government as well.
SP M. Masrukur Rahman Khaled in his speeches urged the NGO representatives to keep a lot of contribution in this regard as it is not possible to check the misuse of narcotics for a single department without active participation and efforts of all the stakeholders.
More than 50 NGO representatives from seven upazilas of the district, including journalists of print and electronic media, took part in the workshop.
