Deputy Commissioner (DC) here M Abdus Samad urged the NGOs, and donor agencies including socio-economical organizations of the society with help and assistance to stand beside the flood victims to mitigate their sufferings.
DC made the appeal while addressing an emergency meeting of district disaster management committee (DDMC) on current flood and the doings held at the conference room of the district collectorate building here on Thursday afternoon.
The DC said the four major rivers of the country-the Brahmaputra, the Ghagot, the Teesta and the Karotoa flow through the district.
At the middle of the last month, water levels of all the rivers here started rising due to heavy downpour and onrush of hilly waters from the upstream, he also said.
At one stage, the rivers had been flowing above their respective danger level for few days at a stretch inundating Brahmaputra and Teesta river basin and chars including mainland of the district located on both sides of the Ghagot and the Karotoa rivers, he added.
Due to the flood, about 1.5 lakh people of the district had been marooned and many of them took shelter on the nearby primary schools and flood control embankment with their belongings and domestic animals, he further added.
Sufferings of the thousands of marooned people particularly the poor ones mount at this moment and they need money and staple food to pass their days and nights smoothly, the DC opined.
Though the district administration distributed 305 tonnes of rice and cash TK 6.71 lakh received from the Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management and relief materials of TK 6.18 lakh from the Ministry of social Welfare to the flood victims, it was not sufficient than the requirement, the DC spoke.
In this context, the DC in his presidential speeches urged the NGOs, donor agencies, and socio-economic organizations including the well off persons of the society to stand beside the flood affected people here with staple food and other support to mitigate their sufferings.
Earlier, police super M Ashraful Islam, executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board Abdul Awal, deputy director of department of agriculture extension AKM Ruhul Amin, executive engineer of Public Health Engineering Department Aminul Islam Chowdhury and district primary education officer AKM Amirul Islam presented their departmental activities regarding current flood in the district.
All the members of the DDMC, upazila chairmen, UNOs, district level
officials, social workers, and NGO activists including journalists of print and electronic media and national news agency took part in the meeting.
