European Union Ambassador to Dhaka Pierre Mayaudon has hoped that all political parties in Bangladesh will participate in the next general election taking a lesson from the experience of 2014.
“Free and impartial election is the pillar of democracy. There is no alternative but to hold an acceptable election to strengthen democracy. I hope, all the political parties will take part in the next general election to make the polls more participatory,” the EU envoy told a function organized ahead of Europe Day today at EU Office in the city’s Gulshan on Monday.
The programme marked the 60th anniversary of the signature of the Treaties of Rome, which laid the foundations for the European Union or European Economic Community.
The next national election is scheduled to be held in 2019.
Pierre Mayaudon also dwelt on Bangladesh- EU relations, condition of the RMG sector, Rohingya problem, France election result, Hefazat-e-Islam and some other issues.
About the Hefazat’s participation in the next election, the EU envoy said, “It is not possible to maintain all norms of democracy keeping someone outside. I think the probable participation of Hefazat in polls and politics should be considered positively.”
He also said that present government’s outlook over the Hefazat affairs would help build up an inclusive society. “I think, it is positive to build up a relation with different segments of the society,” he stated.
