The Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka yesterday (Wednesday) recorded the depositions of the complainant of the blogger Ahmed Rajeeb Haider murder case. Later, Judge Syeed Ahmed of the tribunal fixed June 2 for recording the deposition of other witnesses.
The complainant Dr Nazim Uddin, who is also the father of the victim architect Ahmed Rajeed, told the court: “I have come to know that the eight indicted persons killed my son through newspaper reports. I demand exemplary punishment to the killers.”
Earlier, the same court framed charges afresh against the eight accused in
the case, responding to a plea of the Special Public Prosecutor Md Mahbubur Rahman of the tribunal on May 21. He filed an application in which he urged the court to frame fresh charges as the murder scene was not described clearly in the previous indictment documents.
Of the accused, Mufti Jasim Uddin Rahmani has been indicted under section 302 and 107 of the penal code while the others were indicted under section 302 and 34.
On March 18, Judge Ruhul Amin of the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court passed an indictment order against Mufti Jasim, chief of the banned militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team, and seven students of North South University. However, they were later expelled from the university.
On May 12, the case was shifted to Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka from the Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court for quick disposal. Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a gazette notification to transfer the case documents of the Rajib murder case to the present tribunal.
Rajeeb, known as Thaba Baba in the bloggers’ community, was hacked to death on February 15, 2013 near his Pallabi residence. The murder happened ten days after movement begun at Shahbagh demanding death penalty to the war criminals of 1971 and a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir.
The following day, the victim’s father Nazim Uddin lodged the murder case with Pallabi Police Station of the capital.
Ansarullah is reportedly a Bangladeshi follower of al-Qaeda. Its chief Jasim was arrested on September 2, 2013. He made a confessional statement to a court admitting that the students inspired by his sermons might have killed Rajeeb. Alledged ‘Instigator’ Jasim and his six followers pleaded not guilty and demanded justice to the court. Another accused Rana, also a former NSU student, is currently on the run.
The accused students are “planner” Redwanul Azad Rana (fugitive), Faisal Bin Nayeem alias Dip, Maksudul Hassan alias Anik, Ehsan Reza Rumman, Nayeem Sikder alias Irad, Nafiz Imtiaz and Sadman Yasir Mahmud. Of them, Rana is a prime suspect in the blogger Avijit Roy murder. The DMP recently announced a Tk 5 lakh bounty to help police arrest Rana. Earlier, the DB police sent letters to Immigration Police and the BGB to stop him leaving the country.
