The court of Special Tribunal Judge, Nitai Chandra Saha, in verdict, pronounced on Tuesday, handed down death penalty to two men and acquitted two others for killing Doctor Shafiqul Islam, owner of Jess Clinic near Jessore General Hospital in Jessore town on July 29, 2009. Prosecutor SM Badruzzaman Palash who conducted the case on behalf of the government confirmed the information of the verdict to journalists. The convicted are Ashiqur Rahman Bablu, 40, son of Rajab Ali and Saiful Islam Jakir, 36, son of Miratul Haque, all of Ghope Nawapara in Jessore town. The acquitted are Rabbu alias Mursalin of New Town and M Raihan of Ghope Nawapara in Jessore town. Dr Shafiqul Islam, the then Jessore district unit treasurer of BMA and also owner of Jess Clinic was killed by a number of terrors inside his at around 10 pm on July 29, 2009. The terrors stabbed Dr Shafiqul Islam in the head and thigh in the clinic owned by the victim. Abdus Salam Dhabak, father of the dead, filed a case with Kotwali police station in this connection on July 30, 2009.
Mason electrocuted in C’nawabganj

A mason was electrocuted at Pithalitala Monnapara village under Shibganj municipality of Chapainawabganj district on Tuesday.The deceased was identified as Matiur Rahnan, 25, son of late Hodu Mondol of Fultala village under Chatrajitpur union of Shibganj upazila. Police and local sources said Matiur Rahman was electrocuted when he came in contact with a live electric wire while working as a mason in the house of one Tariqul of the village at around 9 am. He died on the spot.
1,368 bottles of Phensidyl recovered
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 1,368 bottles of contraband Indian Phensidyl syrup raiding two houses at Chawkpara village in Shibganj upazila on Tuesday. Acting on secrete information, a BGB team, led by Subedar Abu Taher of Sonamasjid border camp of BGB-9 battalion, conducted a raid on the house of one Sadequl Islam at Chawkpara around 5pm and recovered 466 bottles of Phensidyl syrup from there, said director of the battalionLt Colonel SM Abul Ehsan. One hour later, the same team conducted another raid on another house at the village and recovered 902 bottles of the narcotic item.
Two held, foreign currencies seized at Benapole

Benapole customs officials arrested two travelers from no-man’s land along Benapole land port on Thursday while they were going to India, customs sources said. The arrestees are Mokhlesur Rahman, 37of Kaptanbazar, Dhaka and Khairul Islam, 38 of Nandipara Jame Mosque Road, Khilgaon, Dhaka. The two were picked up from no-man’s land area while they were wailing to leave Bangladesh after completing every procedure on Thursday, said Uttam Samaddar, customs official.
