BRAC official convicted by Barisal court for corruption

A Barisal court on Wednesday afternoon awarded five-year rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 11 lakhs for corruption by misappropriating funds to a BRAC official. Sharif Uddin Azad, judge of special judge court, announced this verdict against the absconding accused Bonita Aich, former accountant of BRAC Nazirpur upazila branch under Pirojpur district. Court sources said Bonita Aich while working as accountant of BRAC Nazirpur upazila branch under Pirojpur district from 2001-2006 misappropriated Tk 10, 45,200 by giving false vouchers. A S M Zakaria, Thana in charge of BRAC lodged an allegation in this connection with Anti Corruption Commission on June 2007. Rammohan Nath, deputy director ACC Barisal office, after investigation filed charge sheet on June 2008. After examining 16 out of 25 witnesses and other evidences court announced the verdict against the accused to suffer 5 year rigorous imprisonment and also fined Tk. 11, 45,200 including the amount of misappropriated fund.
8 injured in bride – bridegroom groups clash over presentations
Atleast eight people were injured in clash between bride and bridegroom groups over presentations at marriage ceremony in Chargogla village under CharKawa union of Barisal Sadar upazila on Wednesday afternoon. The foods, pandels, furniture of the ceremony were ransacked during the incident and police rushed to the spot controlled the situation. Sub Inspector Shahidul Alam of Barisal Kotwali police station visiting the spot , said the clash started after the bridegroom group completing official formalities of marriage and taking lunch there refused to accept the presentations given to bridegroom from the bride’s family alleging those substandard and insufficient. Following altercations on this issue both groups engaged in clash at the spot. In the clash, Tanvir Hossain, Aleya Begum, Nazrul Islam, from bridegroom group were injured and admitted at Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Mozzamel Hossain, father of the bridegroom.
UP Chairman with his 4 aides held with yaba

A Union Parishad Chairman along with his 4 aides have been arrested with Yaba tablets here in Hakimpur upazila under Dinajpur district on Friday early hour by the members of Detective branch (DB). The arrested UP chairman was identified as Rawshan Ali, 47, son of Abdur Rahman of Khodaipur village under Nawabganj upazila in Dinajpur and UP chairman Gopalganj UP under Nawabganj upazila inDinajpur. Other arrested persons were Md. Shafiqul Islam, 30, son of Nazmul Islam, Nawpara village under Hakimpur upazila, Mostafizur Rahman, 30, son of Mofazzal Hossain Kesabpur village under Birampur, Mosiur Rahman, 32, son of Younus Ali of Khodaipur village under Nawaganj upazila and Shahadat Hossain, 30, son Sobed Ali of Khorkhotia under Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur. A team of Dinajpur Directive Branch [DB], led by Redwanur Rahman OC of Dinajpur DB raided at Nawpara village at around 3.30am Friday and arrested the chairman with 2 pieces of Yaba tablets.
Youth jailed for possessing hemp in Satkhira
SATKHIRA: A mobile court here on Wednesday sentenced a young man to two years’ imprisonment for possessing hemp. The convict was identified as Imran Hossain, 22, son of Akbar Ai, a resident of Kochupur village in Sadar upazila. Assistant director of the Narcotics Control Department Kazi Harun-or-Rashid said being tipped off, they conducted a raid in the area at about 9:00am and arrested Imran along with 250 grams of hemp. Later, the arrestee was produced before the mobile court of executive magistrate Asaduzzaman who handed down the verdict. The arrestee was sent to jail. Outlaw leader held in Chuadanga Chuadanga, May 8 (UNB)-Police arrested a leader of outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party from Sultanpur village in Damurhuda upazila early Thursday, reports UNB.
