The 16th anniversary of death of former special correspondent of Daily Janakantha Shamsur Rahman was observed in Jessore on Saturday. Different programmes were chalked out by Jessore Press Club, Journalists Union of Jessore, Jessore Journalists’ Union, Newspaper Owners’ Association and family of the slaim journalist to mark the day. The programmes include wearing black badges, placing floral wreath at the grave, discussions and doa mahfils. Prof Dr Abdus Sattar, vice-chancellor, Jessore University of Science and Technology was the chief guest at a discussion. The discussions were attended among others by Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, former president, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, ( faction), Jahid Hasan Tukun, president, Jessore Press Club, Jahirul Islam Chaklader Rentu, mayor, Jessore Municipality, Fakir Shaukat, former president of Jessore Press Club, Tauhidur Rahman, General Secretary, Ahsan Kabir, former general secretary, Noor Islam, vice- president, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists’ ( faction), M Ayub, General Secretary, Journalists’ Union of Jessore. Journalist leaders, in their speech, demanded trial of the slain journalist.
Student held on charge of attempt to rape

Mohiuddin Hawladar (19), a student of XI year Commerce class of Rayenda Degree College and son of one Md. Idris Ali, a businessman of Rayenda Bazar in Bagerhat was arrested by the police on the charge of attempt to commit rape on a Madrasa girl student. It is reported that on Wednesday at 9 am, a girl student (12) of class-VII (of a local Madrasa) who is a neighbour of the boy went to his residence for an urgent piece of business. Finding the girl alone the debauched college student caught her, took her into his bed room forcibly and tried to commit rape on her. But finding no other alternative the girl cried out loudly for help. 0n hearing the cry her grand mother rushed to the spot and rescued her from the hands of the debauched. Later, the locals caught the college student and handed him over to the police. The victim was admitted to Sharankhola Upazila Health Complex for her treatment. But the doctor on duty sent her to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for her better treatment. Abdul Jalil, OC , Sharankhola PS disclosed, the college student was arrested and a case was registered with the PS against the boy under Woman and Chidren Repression Act.
MP Prof Dr Abdul Mannan passes away

Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan former M.P of Kishoreganj- 2 (Katiadi-Pakundia) and Executive Member of Bangladesh Awami League died at his clinic in the capital on Saturday noon. He was 90. He left his two sons, one daughter and survied by a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death. President Md. Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Public Administration Minister and Awami League General Seceretary Syed Ashraful Islam M.P, Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu M.P, Labour Manpower and Emplyment State Minister Mojibul Haque Chnnu, Rejown Ahamed Toufiq M.P, Dilara Begum Asma M.P, Adv Sohorab Uddin M.P, B.C.B President Nazmul Hasan Papon M.P, Deputy Commissioner Md. Azimuddin Biswas, Police Super Md. Anowar Hossain Khan, Zila Parished Administrator Advocate Zillur Rahman, Kishoreganj Pourashava Mayor Md. Parvez Mia, Katiadi Upazila Chairman Abdul Wahab Md. Ainuddin, P.P Advocate Shah Azizul Hoque, CAB President Alam Sarowar Tito and Chamber President Mojibur Rahman Belal expressed deep shock and condolence message at the death of Dr. Abdul Mannan. He was elected Member of Parliament of Kishoreganj- 2 constituency (Katiadi-Pakundia) in 2001 and 2008.
